Description
Hemerocallis is a genus of about 15 species of flowering plants in the family Hemerocallidaceae. They are native to Asia, predominantly China, Korea and Japan. The name Hemerocallis originates from ancient Greek, ‘Hemera’ meaning ‘Day’ and ‘Kallos’ meaning beauty, this gives rise to their common name of Daylily which represents the fact that each bloom only lasts for one day.
Hemerocallis is a hardy garden plant. They are easy to grow, drought tolerant and simply require a sunny position. They thrive in any soil from clay to sand and are easily grown in a sunny or partly shaded position with fertile, moist, well-drained soil. They flower prolific throughout June, July and August.
