Streptocarpus ‘Pretty Turtle’
Description
Streptocarpus 'Pretty Turtle' is a delightful and attractive houseplant, known for its unique, turtle-shaped leaves and beautiful purple flowers. This flowering plant is native to southern Africa and is often called the Cape Primrose or False African Violet. It gets its name from its fuzzy leaves that look like a turtle's shell. Plus, it’s easy to care for, making it a fantastic choice for beginners.
Light Requirements
- Indirect Light:'Pritty Turtle' flourishes in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.
- Low Light Tolerance: While it prefers bright conditions, it can tolerate lower light levels, although this may impact flowering.
Watering
- Moderate Watering: Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry. It's better to underwater than overwater.
- Avoid Waterlogging: Ensure that excess water drains out to prevent root rot. Use room temperature water to avoid shocking the plant.
Soil
- Well-Draining Mix: A light, well-draining potting mix is ideal. A mix designed for African violets or a combination of peat, perlite, and orchid bark works well.
- pH Level: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH range (around 6.0 to 7.0).
Care
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity levels (around 50-70%). You can increase humidity by misting the leaves or using a humidity tray.
- Temperature: Ideal temperatures range from 18°C to 24°C. Protect from drafts and extreme temperature changes.
- Fertilising: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to early autumn).
- Pruning: Remove spent flowers and any dead or damaged leaves to encourage new growth and maintain appearance.
Repotting
- Frequency: Repot every couple of years or when it outgrows its pot. Choose a pot that is one size larger with fresh soil.
