Description
Begonia elatior, commonly referred to as the Elatior begonia, is a popular flowering houseplant celebrated for its vibrant blooms and attractive foliage. This species is a hybrid begonia, typically characterised by its upright growth habit and glossy, dark green leaves.
The flowers of Begonia elatior display a variety of colours, including yellow, red, pink, peach and white, often featuring a ruffled appearance. They usually bloom in clusters, providing a delightful splash of colour to indoor spaces.
The plant thrives best in bright, indirect light, as excessive direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. It is important to keep the soil consistently moist without becoming soggy, ensuring thorough watering while allowing excess water to drain away. Elatior begonias also appreciate higher humidity levels, so misting the leaves or using a humidity tray can be beneficial.
These plants flourish in temperatures ranging from 15°C to 24°C. During the growing season in spring and summer, applying a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks can encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Begonia elatior is an excellent choice for adding colour to your home and is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both novice and experienced plant enthusiasts.
