Description
Calathea makoyana, commonly referred to as the Peacock Plant, is a highly sought-after houseplant celebrated for its exquisite foliage.
In terms of appearance, the leaves showcase a distinctive pattern with dark green and lighter green stripes that resemble the plumage of a peacock. The undersides of the leaves often display a stunning purple hue. This plant typically grows to a height of approximately 30 to 60 centimetres, classifying it as a medium-sized specimen. Although it is capable of producing small, white flowers, these are not particularly striking and generally do not serve as the main attraction.
For optimal care, the Peacock Plant prefers bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can scorch its leaves. It is important to keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, watering when the top centimetre of soil feels dry. The plant thrives in high humidity, so misting the leaves or using a humidifier is beneficial. It enjoys warm temperatures ranging from 18°C to 27°C, and it is best to avoid cold drafts. When it comes to soil, a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged is ideal.
